Hello! My name is Jillian and I am a piano major at Western University. I began playing the piano when I was 8 years old, after my grandmother gave me her piano. Once I started taking piano lessons, I was hooked. I began to learn the guitar when I was 12, and later when I entered high school I picked up the flute. Throughout high school, I was very involved with my school's music program, participating in concert band, choir, and jazz band. At age 15, I started to take violin lessons and I also began to teach myself the French horn at this time. My music teachers have inspired me to pursue music by showing the impact that music education and involvement can have on a student. I'm looking forward to this semester, as I can't wait to for all of the new ideas we will explore and the new concepts we will learn!

Jillian,
I find your passion for your instruments to be inspiring! I enjoy that you shared the doubt family members had for your ambition, it's amazing how things turned out. Do you think doubt from others can sometimes inspire us to rise to new challenges? I'm incredibly impressed at your talent for multiple instruments, are there any you'd still like to learn? I also grew up at a high school with a small music program, do you think there's advantages to this type of learning experience? How wonderful your grandfather could find memories through the music you shared, would you ever consider working with music and the elderly? (There's an incredible documentary called "Alive Inside" that shows the incredible improvement in cognition in the elderly with memory-related issues, you might find it interesting.) Do you think that if you hadn't taken that first step towards piano, your self-identity would be very different? Do you think a key to being a growing musician is to pursue different instruments?
It was wonderful to watch your video, and I appreciated the details about your personal life you included. They seemed to me to add depth to your video.

Rose,
I do think that the doubt from others can inspire us to rise to new challenges. I may have not gotten to where I am today if I had not had the motivation to prove my family wrong and keep working hard at piano. There are many instruments that I would still like to learn! I would like to learn as many as possible, and I'd especially like to give brass instruments, including French horn, another try. I'm really looking forward to learning percussion next year in the music ed stream. There are advantages to being in a small music program. In a small program, I was able to have more one-on-one instruction on the flute, which definitely helped my musicality grow in many ways.I would definitely consider working with the elderly someday, as I believe very strongly that music therapy has a positive impact on the elderly. I think that if I was to be a music therapist, I would offer music therapy to all ages though, because I think that it is something that everybody can benefit from. I do not think I would be who I am today if I had not began piano. Piano helped me to discover who I am and develop who I want to be. Most of my life goals do revolve around music. I think that the key to being a musician is to spread the joy that music can create, not necessarily just learn as many instruments as possible. It is helpful to know several instruments though, I think there are more opportunities to spread music if one has knowledge about many instruments.
I'm glad you enjoyed my video and thank you for the feedback!!! I will look up that documentary for sure!
